General Objectives

The Master of Management Bridging Courses and Seminars are for students, professionals, entrepreneurs and other participants which aim to provide minimum proficiency levels in Accounting, Mathematics, Economics, and Statistics, as well as the skills in effective written and oral communication. Basic ability and competency levels in these subjects are requirements for students before they are generally accepted in the Master of Management Program.

The bridging courses offer fundamental knowledge and tools for students to undertake graduate-level courses in Managerial Accounting and Control, Managerial Economics, and other subjects specifically, Applied Research and Organizational Communication.

Likewise, professionals, entrepreneurs and other participants shall be provided by these seminars the opportunity to acquire basic knowledge and skills which shall be useful in their respective organizations and/or in their businesses, as well as to serve as an avenue for continuing education and training.

Main Features

  • Offered June and July for the First Semester and November and December  before the beginning of the Second Semester  of each School Year.
  • Content and scope are designed as modules to facilitate a more applied and functional method of learning.
  • Conducted in well-equipped and learning-conducive classrooms for a required number of hours by highly qualified and trained faculty- facilitators.
  • Accounting for Executives and Non-Accountants and Mathematics for Economics and Management are conducted for 42 hours each and are spread out in a two-week period of intensive participant-centered training.
  • Statistics for Managers and Non-Statisticians and Organizational Communication are usually done for 16 hours for a two-day schedule.
  • Lectures, reinforcement exercises and activities, assessment/achievement tests, writing and oral exercises, computer hands-on exercises, and  active participation in discussions are used as seminar/training methodologies to maximize a more holistic and integrated learning experience and participation.
  • Minimal fees are charged to cover learning materials.
  • Full attendance for the whole duration of the bridging courses/seminars is required. A certificate of attendance is given at the end of the bridging courses/seminars.

Registration is done by accomplishing a form at the Institute of Management or through e-mail (see back cover for e-mail address). Schedules for the Bridging Courses and Seminars can be accessed through the website, http://www.upb.edu.ph, announced in local newspapers and posted on the Institute’s bulletin boards. Payment of fee/s is made before attendance in the sessions.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS, OBJECTIVES and CONTENT

1. ACCOUNTING FOR EXECUTIVES and NON-ACCOUNTANTS (Duration: 42 hours)

Course Description

This is an introductory course in Accounting that seeks to provide participants with fundamental knowledge and tools necessary to understand the financial operations of organizations. This also serves as a primer to managerial accounting and control in organizations.

Course Objectives

The course aims for the participants to:

  • develop an understanding of the basic concepts and principles that form the foundation of the accounting practice;
  • create awareness and appreciation of the processes involved in the accounting function of organizations and attain insight into the role of financial information in decision-making;
  • analyze the elements and uses of the basic financial statements, and;
  • develop the ability to analyze financial transactions and prepare financial reports.

Course Content

  • Module 1. Conceptual Framework: Financial Accounting, The Accounting Information System, and The Accounting Cycle;
  • Module 2. Transaction Cycles, Accounting Controls and Basic Financial Reports;
  • Module 3. Balance Sheet: Current Assets, Investments and Fixed Assets;
  • Module 4. Balance Sheet: Liabilities and Net Worth;
  • Module 5. Income Statement: Revenues and Expenses, and;
  • Module 6. Cash Flows Statements.

2. MATHEMATICS FOR ECONOMICS AND MANAGEMENT (Duration: 42 hours)

Course Description

This is a course in introductory mathematical and economic tools, and fundamental economic concepts and principles for analysis and decision making in management.

 

Course Objectives

The course aims for the participants to:

     •  analyze management and economic problems from a quantitative perspective, and;

     •  apply mathematical and economic concepts, analysis and tools where appropriate.

 

Course Content

  • Module 1. Diagnostic Test; Relations and Functions, Graphs of Functions and Relations, Linear Functions and Quadratic Functions;
  • Module 2. Common Graphs, Systems of Linear Equations in Two Variables, Types of Systems, Solving Systems of Equations, Problem Solving;
  • Module 3. Calculus: Review of Functions, Introduction to Limits, The Derivative and Techniques of Differentiation;
  • Module 4. Calculus: Derivatives on Curve-sketching, Derivatives as Rate of Change, Optimization and Application in Business and Economics;
  • Module 5. Functions of More Than One Variable, Partial Derivatives, Optimization of Functions of Two Variables and Lagrange Multipliers;
  • Module 6. Mathematics of Finance: Arithmetic Sequence and Arithmetic Series, Geometric Sequence and Geometric Series and Simple Interest;
  • Module 7. Mathematics of Finance: Compound Interest, Annuity, Ordinary Annuity and Annuity Due. An achievement test is given on Algebra;
  • Module 8. Introductory Concepts and Principles in Economics.

3. ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION (Duration: 12 hours)

Course Description

This course introduces the relevance of effective communication skills as applied to private and public organizations, with emphasis on writing and presentations, and the use of communicator’s tools and writing techniques in document completion.

Course Objectives

The course aims for the participants to:

  • discuss the relevance of effective communication in achieving career success;
  • describe the use of documentation styles;
  • identify and use the writer’s tool guide and apply this in writing, and preparing reports, and;
  • create a persuasive presentation.

Course Content

  • Module 1. Basic Communication: Basic Model of Communication, How Culture Affects Communication, Nonverbal, Listening and Speaking Skills, Obstacles to Organizational Communication, Communication in Service Economy and Communication in the Global Workplace
  • Module 2. Organizational Documents: Instructions, Proposals, Formal Reports, Cases and Writing Process
  • Module 3. Making Reports: Data Collection, Analyzing Data and Preparing Visual Aids, Planning, Drafting, Revising, Formatting, and Proofreading Reports, and Documentation Styles : APA.
  • Module 4. Persuasive Presentation.

4. STATISTICS FOR MANAGERS AND NON-STATISTICIANS (Duration: 16 hours)

Course Description

This is a course on fundamental statistical tools and techniques used in data analysis, evaluation and interpretation which are useful for managers and non-statisticians for decision making.

Course Objectives

The course aims for the participants to:

  • acquire a strong background in fundamental statistical principles by familiarizing them on how to be both good "consumers" of statistics;
  • develop an ability to effectively evaluate and act upon reports and data in organizations;
  • apply the use of appropriate statistical analyses and tools, and;
  • acquaint with standard statistical analyses by using the SPSS statistical software.

Course Content

  • basic overview of the research process ;
  • application of statistics in the research process;
  • common statistical tools and terms, and;
  • use of the SPSS as statistical software package in statistical analysis and statistical process control
